One of the most promising indie games I have played this year is now available to download for free on Xbox, and I highly suggest you do not sleep on this one if you’re a Stardew Valley or Mario fan.
A couple of weeks ago, Iron Pineapple featured a little, unknown title called Overthrown in their latest “Souls-likes You’ve Never Heard Of” series.
I probably watched about two total minutes of gameplay before I immediately knew that I had to give it a go.

Developers Brimstone describe Overthrown as a “chaotic city builder”, but to be honest I think that’s kind of underselling it.
The aim of the game is to build a city and keep your citizens happy, yes, but it’s actually the movement system and the silly ways you can interact with the environment that got me hooked.
The tight controls, the breadth of satisfying parkour options, and the freedom to do weird stuff like sprint on water gives Overthrown a sort of Super Mario Odyssey vibe - and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.
And, if you’re an Xbox owner, I have some great news for you too, as you can currently download Overthrown through both Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Preview.

Now, as you might have already clocked from the fact that Overgrown is available through Xbox Game Preview, you should be warned that this game is in early access.
Personally, I think the foundations of a brilliant game are already there.
The only real thing I can fault Overthrown for at this point in time is that there isn’t really much in the way of endgame content.
However, I think that they’ve already nailed the most important gameplay aspects of the game, so I am extremely excited to see what this one looks like when it is fully released.
