The next Halo game could be a make or break point for the franchise, as it sounds like it’ll finally be going back to basics.
As a lifelong Halo fan, I’ve been really disappointed with what the series has become over the last decade.
What was once Xbox’s crown jewel has become washed-out and something needs to change to get the first-person-shooter back on top.
With Halo: Infinite essentially dead in the water and its single player campaign being continued through a book rather than DLC, it’s clear the next Halo game is our best chance at turning things around, and a new teaser has been rather promising…

Lead FX Artist at Halo Studios, Daniel Henley, recently teased the future of the Halo series. He said: “The original Halo franchise was a graphics showcase. It was best in class. That’s what Halo was when it was first released. That’s what Halo needs to be again.”
Sounds great, and those official images of Halo in Unreal Engine 5 seem to point to the next game being a serious graphical improvement.
That’s not to say Halo: Infinite was ugly, but it is kind of hilarious that an entirely new engine was made for Halo: Infinite, the Slipspace Engine, and it’s already being scrapped for Unreal…
Whatever the case, it sounds like a good plan, but I do worry that the next game will focus too much on the visuals and forget what gave Halo the legs to stand as one of Xbox’s best franchises: the gameplay.

It’s far too early to speculate anyway as the next Halo game is clearly still a long way off, and that’s good as it needs time to cook.
What’ll be most interesting to see though is if it’ll actually be called Halo 7, or if it’ll have a rebooted title instead.
