Steam has shadow dropped three of the most iconic PlayStation survival horror games, and they are available for an absolute steal.

Fans of Capcom’s iconic survival horror series, Resident Evil, were pleasantly surprised that the original trilogy that became famous on the PlayStation is now all available on the PC platform, Steam. What’s more, if you purchase each of the three games today, you’ll benefit from a hefty 50% discount.

Original Resident Evil Trilogy Finally Comes to Steam

Gamers were pleasantly surprised when the original Resident Evil trilogy finally dropped on the Steam store. This is something that fans have wanted for a while.

What’s more, if you purchase Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and/or Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, you’ll benefit from a 50% discount on each, bringing the price down from an already reasonable £7.99 to just £3.99. This discount comes to an end on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.

However, there is one major caveat to the Steam releases, and that’s the dreaded DRM (Digital Rights Management), of which there are two kinds on the platform.

Enigma DRM Has Been Implemented

Steam DRM is imposed by a publisher/developer to help prevent digital distribution and piracy of the software. It also verifies player ownership through Steam and thus requires its launcher and an online connection to play.

However, it doesn't always work as intended, because it doesn't always prevent piracy. It can hinder game visuals and performance, and because of its nature, gamers don’t really have ownership, and a publisher/developer can remove access from a game at any point.

As for Enigma DRM, this uses a more sophisticated encryption to combat digital distribution and piracy; it’s incredibly anti-consumer, even more so than the standard Steam DRM.

It adds an extra layer of security by protecting the file, rather than just being tied to a Steam account. It can not only hinder visuals and performance, but it can clash with anti-virus software, it's very anti-mod (Resident Evil has a thriving mod community), and it’s been known to hinder access to games on the Steam Deck.

Capcom did implement Enigma DRM on the Resident Evil 4 remake, but it was thankfully removed. So, hopefully, the same will happen with this original trilogy.

Thankfully, There Is a Consumer-Friendly Alternative

In 2024, the original Resident Evil trilogy was released on the PC platform, GOG. A benefit of the original Resident Evil trilogy on GOG is that they’re DRM-free.

Meaning that you own the digital rights to those games, there’s no need for a launcher or internet connection to access them. The publisher can’t remove them from your hard drive, and for the most part, games perform better than those with DRM implemented.

Of course, the benefit of having the original Resident Evil trilogy (as well as the two OG Dino Crisis games) on Steam is that you can have all your games in one place. But the same can also be said about GOG (which is where my games are). That being said, at least we have options.
