PlayStation has announced a spiffy new piece of hardware to celebrate the upcoming release of 007 First Light.

007 First Light is set to be a bombastic origin story for the world’s most famous super spy, brought to you by the same team behind the iconic Hitman franchise.

The game is set to launch next month but unfortunately a lot of gamers are going to be unable to play it.

In lighter news though those who’ll be playing the game on a PlayStation 5 are in for a treat, as a shiny new controller was announced to coincide with the game’s launch.

“This is gold, Mr. Bond."

Teased “for your hands only” the new controller is gold, which is obviously a recurring colour for the James Bond franchise.

You had Goldfinger which was full of the stuff, and of course the Man With The Golden Gun which is famous for, you guessed it, a golden gun. The golden gun also makes a return as a nifty addition to 007 First Light’s collector’s edition.

While it certainly has the appearance of gold it obviously won’t cost as much, though given that it’s limited-edition don’t expect it to be cheap either.

Visually speaking it’s quite a fetching controller, but it’s dragged down ever so slightly by the gun-barrel design in the middle.

The gun-barrel itself is a nice touch but having the game’s logo slapped into the middle doesn’t do it any favours, it’d be better off without it.

Speaking more about the design philosophy of the controller was Rasmus Poulsen, Franchise Art Director for 007 First Light.

In the official PlayStation blogpost that accompanied the controller’s announcement Poulson said: “The golden finish pays tribute to the elegance, legacy, and timeless style of the franchise, while the barrel-inspired detailing reflects the themes of the game and how it feels to play it, as well as being a nod to one of pop culture’s most recognizable visual signatures.

“Every element of the DualSense design was crafted as a celebration of Bond’s return, blending legacy and modernity to create a controller that feels unmistakably 007 from the moment you see it.”

The new controller will go up for preorder on the PlayStation Store on 17 April and will cost $84.99/£74.99.

It’ll release on 27 May, which is the same day 007 First Light will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
