Steam is ending support for certain MacOS systems in 2025, which will leave gamers with no option to play the games they own.
As reported over on Reddit, Steam will no longer be supporting MacOS 10.15 as of 15 February 2025, meaning users will have to upgrade their MacOS, if that’s even possible.
Coming to PC very soon is the next looter shooter in the Borderlands franchise
The difficulty with playing games on Mac has always been restrictions. Either the game simply doesn’t run on Mac hardware, or Apple upgrades the OS and drops support for older hardware, which is the case here.

The Reddit post gets into the details as the original poster, ItsYaboi_ says, “This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of macOS.”
With Apple forcing OS updates on users and shutting out older hardware, it makes it tougher for companies like Steam to support the hardware folks are using.
This sucks, especially if Mac gaming is your only way to play and suddenly your OS isn’t supported.
So, if you’ve got an older Mac that is unsupported by Apple, it then won’t be supported by companies like Valve or Google to facilitate the running of your games.

What this means to gamers is hard to say. Steam often sends out hardware surveys that scan your hardware to keep track of what players are using, and it’s unlikely Mac, particularly older Macs, are high on that list.
Still, that doesn’t help players who just want access to the games they have paid for.
Another Redditor, mroosa, describes the problem they have with gaming on Macs, “some of those Macs I have in the house will not update to newer versions of Mac OS, at least not without something like the OpenCore Legacy patcher.”
Sadly, it seems many gamers may have to jump through these hoops if they want to keep playing on their Macs.
