Steam drops 9 free games you can download and keep forever

But any of these free games actually worth a go?

Nine free games can currently be yours on Steam, and you don’t have to do a single thing to earn ‘em. Just redeem them, and they’ll be yours to keep forever.

As always, a massive, huge shout-out to whoever runs the Free Steam Games Twitter account. Seriously, whoever you are, we all love you.

You know the drill. I’m going to list these in order of quality. Worst at the start, best at the end. That being said, I haven’t actually played any of these myself, so it’s mostly vibes-based.

First up, Internet Fisherman by developer and publisher Netzz. I'm taking the word of the reviewers here, but apparently it's just a lazy idler-game with some Steam inventory stuff. Really cannot recommend this one, regardless of how cute the art looks.

Dysterra by developer and publisher Reality MagiQ looks high-quality and fun, but don't trust that fancy-looking trailer.

Although it’s “free” to download, the reviewers state that you actually need to pay to use the servers. Also, it’s apparently really buggy.

The Easter Bunny Game by developer and publisher FunLittleGames LTD looks... fine.

It’s Bomberman with bunnies. It looks fun enough, but I worry how much you could get out of a game like this long-term. Worth a shot, which is more than I can say for the last two.

Green Thing From The Planet Jupiter, from developer Slugworks Interactive and publisher Invisible Seams Studios, looks a little barebones to me, but the reviewers say otherwise.

Apparently, it’s fun. I suppose you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Maybe this is a good one for those of you with kids.

Vampire Master from developer and publisher Game Hollywood Games looks like a relatively high-quality looking idler game to me, but the reviews here are a bit mixed.

The issue for most folks seems to be that it’s a bit of a shoddy mobile port, which is honestly impressively bad for an idler gamer. Still, it looks like someone cared about making it look pretty.

This next one is an odd one. Aliya's Awakening: DOGE 2042 is a "cyberpunk" detective game from developer and publisher Digital Strategies, and... look, the reviews are really positive. I'll say that much.

But… I’m getting real weird vibes. Obviously all the art is AI-generated, so that means it loses -5,000 aura straight away. The narrative’s focus is just giving me a strange feeling, though. All the focus on DOGE makes it feel like some kind of crypto advert. Download at your own risk.

Ok. Phew. I think we’re finally transitioning into semi-decent territory with this next one.

Zombie Pandemia 2D is a top-down zombie shooter from developer and publisher SpaceGhostTriFF, and I think it looks charming in an old-school kind of way.

Reminds me of the type of games I used to play on Newgrounds as a kid. Reviews are few and far between at the moment, but I’m willing to give this the benefit of the doubt.

Ok, I very much like the look of this one. Abashed is an exploration puzzle game from developer and publisher Supantha Paul, and I'm very impressed by what I can see so far.

This one is only a demo, but I think it looks high-quality enough that I’m putting this one this high up regardless. I’ll be giving this a go myself.

Novice in the world is a turn-based RPG from developer and publisher cainiaochuangjianghu (thank god for copy and paste).

The reviews on this one are very positive, but I wanna add in a little caveat here. Even the negative reviews praise the game, but it sounds like the monetised elements of the game are a little heavy. Still, I can’t deny that it looks impressive.

And that’s the whole list. Personally, I’ll be trying Abashed, but otherwise I think this might be the worst lineup of free Steam games I’ve ever seen. Here’s hoping next week’s batch is better.
