We’re getting such strong 90’s vibes from this new RPG that we’re beginning to regress. I’m sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of the TV, watching cartoons and eating ice cream. To be honest, I’d likely be doing that anyway, but this game is definitely throwing me back to simpler times.
Under the Island is an action RPG channeling a very particular time; from the top-down camera to the visual style, this scratches that itch of wanting a super simple and enjoyable experience inspired by games like the original Pokemon titles.

Even the premise of the game screams 1990s; You play as Nia who has just moved to Seashell Island and, over the following days, explores the area and meets Avocado. The pair soon learn that the island is sinking quickly into the ocean and they must discover why. Queue a montage of island exploration and action-packed fights.

Under the Island looks gorgeous with bright colours to accentuate island life, and the monsters to be found across the island are, in turn, cute and unique. As the developer notes, “Step into Nia's shoes, and battle ferocious monsters, solve intricate puzzles, and explore different, unique, vibrant ecosystems teeming with life.”
The game is built for several playthroughs with various events that can be played out in the order of your choosing. This provides different challenges across many chances to seek out the mysteries of Seashell Island. Along the way, there are many NPCs to discover and each has a story to tell. This includes your new friend, and rival, Avocado, who tries to foil your attempts at being a hero.
As soon as I saw this game I had to add it to my wishlist on Steam. It’s part nostalgia trip, part bonkers RPG filled with outlandish moments to make you smile.
