Just when you thought that Star Wars Outlaws couldn’t get any more promising, its creative director has confirmed that the devs are making a conscious effort to ensure that the game has the same vibe and style of the original Star Wars film trilogy.
From its official reveal last month, we knew that the story of scoundrel Kay Vess will take place somewhere between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However, as PlayStation LifeStyle reports, in a new interview with Edge Magazine, creative director Julian Gerighty stated that the studio truly “wanted to emulate that feel” of the first three movies.
Take a look at the trailer for Star Wars Outlaws below.
In order to achieve this, the devs have incorporated subtle “vignetting, film grain, lens breathing, the curvature of a thicker lens, [and] the slight lens flares” - all features reminiscent of a 1970s camera. The devs have also been careful to ensure that the technology Kay Vess uses feels like it could have been plucked from the set of one of the original trilogy films.

“It can even come down to something as granular as the industrial design of Kay’s binoculars,” Gerighty said. “There’s a shape language there that is inspired by the 70s or 80s but is fundamentally almost timeless.”
Is anyone else currently running back to that gameplay reveal to see if they can spot any of those nuances themselves? If Ubisoft pulls this off, Outlaws sounds like it has the potential to be a dream come true for Star Wars fans.
It was also recently confirmed that none of Outlaws’ enormous planets will be procedurally generated - each one will be handcrafted. Currently, we don’t know how many planets will be included in the game - so far, fans think that they’ve spotted four or five of them in the trailers.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to release at some point in 2024.
