Uncharted fans split over Uncharted 5's protagonist

Uncharted fans are split as to who they’d like to see carry the Naughty Dog series forward in the yet-to-be-announced next game.

Developed by The Last of Us studio, Naughty Dog, the Uncharted series is one of Sony’s flagship properties on the PlayStation brand. Ever since making its debut on the PlayStation 3 in 2007, fans have continued to be won over by its charming main protagonist Nathan Drake played by the charismatic Nolan North.

However, without giving too much away, let’s just say that the concluding events of 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End left things open-ended with what might happen in the next game. Perhaps that concept was explored in its 2017 follow-up Uncharted: The Lost Legacy starring Chloe Frazier, a veteran character of the series.

At this point, the PlayStation 5 could be the first console not to have a brand new Uncharted game, which would be a damn shame if that remains to be the case when the PlayStation 6 arrives.

With that in mind, Uncharted fans on Reddit have been discussing who could lead the charge in Uncharted 5.

Who should be “the next protagonist of Uncharted 5?” asked a Reddi user who conducted a poll of potential suitors and the numbers were quite interesting.

A new female protagonist came last with just 157 votes followed by a new male protagonist with 299 votes. I assume these two new protagonists have never featured in the Uncharted series.

Then, Chole Frazer had 424 votes, Nathan Drake with 577 votes and finally, Nathan and Elena’s daughter, Cassie topped the pole with ease garnering over 1,000 votes from Reddit users.

A few names not included in the poll were Sam (Drake's brother), Victor Sullivan (Drake's mentor) and surprisingly, Charlie Cutter, a character that made a memorable appearance in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

“Give me Sam, Cutter and Sullivan, please. It’s a perfect trio for a new game,” exclaimed Rubyfanguy.

“Chloe, Nadine Ross and Sam,” Bionic_Ninjas demanded.

“Not gonna lie, a Cassie game would really not interest me. I don’t care for the character .. if anything Charlie and Chloe would be great! I’d love to see them meet up again,” said richboyadler.

Much of the Reddit thread also believes that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End ended things so well, that there’s no need for a new game. In my opinion, it would be a loss to PlayStation and fans if that was ever the case.

Plus, if a compelling story could be told that justifies an Uncharted 5, I believe Naughty Dog would love to bring us a fifth-numbered entry in the series. That’s unless an outsourced studio handles the rumoured remake of the original game.

Either way, I’m not ready to say goodbye to Nathan Drake and his cronies anytime soon.
