It’s always nice to get some freebies, especially when they're related to our favourite way to pass the time and escape from our worldly woes. Yes, I'm talking about playing video games.
Recently, Sony has been running its Season of Play promotion for users on PS5 and PS4. It features free multiplayer windows, new PS Stars campaigns, competitions, and more.
God of War Ragnarök Valhalla releases tomorrow.
However, some gamers are not happy with Sony’s latest freebie, PlayStation avatars. Essentially, these profile pictures are inspired by a variety of video games to be used on our PlayStation profiles on consoles. In total, Sony is giving away five free avatars inspired by Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII, Disco Elysium, Assassin’s Creed II and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege. The free avatars are available until 5 January 2024. Furthermore, you don't even have to subscribe to PS Plus to claim the free avatars.

I admit that offering free avatars is underwhelming. That being said, it’s still something for free and something that we never previously had. What’s more, I wouldn't expect to be given free video games or major DLC as part of the Season of Play promotion, as awesome as that would be.
It’s a shame that the PlayStation 5 still doesn't have dynamic themes, something that was introduced with the PS3 and carried over to PS4. If nothing else, this Season of Play promotion would have been an ideal time to finally release dynamic themes for PS5, but it is what it is.
Regardless, some fans have not shied away from voicing their displeasure at the avatar freebies. “Gotta be honest, these are terrible lmao. The PS Plus logo in the back ruins it too,” said a Twitter user. “These look awful, and I wouldn't be surprised if AI tooling was used in some way on these,” said another. Thankfully at least there were plenty of gamers grateful for the freebies. I’ve downloaded them. I will probably never use them, but you know, freebie and all.
