You might have been missing a neat PlayStation trick without realising it.
We can get stuck in a routine of automatically renewing our PlayStation Plus, to the point that we don’t think to try and trick our way to a discount.
How foolish we’ve been.

As demonstrated by CryptoNite90 on the PS5 subreddit, sometimes it pays to cancel your subscription early to see if any discounts will unlock.
“Go to your PlayStation account on PC or phone browser, click on your profile then click ‘subscriptions management’, then click ‘Cancel’ to cancel your subscription,” they explained.
Not long until Infinity Nikki launches
“Now turn on your PS5, go all the way to the left to PlayStation Plus Premium [...] click ‘Manage Subscription’ and see if it gives you the option to re-buy subscription with a next payment date that shows $119.98. Which is essentially 25% off.”

That’s the abridged version of the guide. If in doubt, you can read the full step-by-step on Reddit.
At this juncture, it’s important to draw your attention to another important piece of information.
As the OP makes quite clear in an edit to their initial post, this trick doesn’t always seem to work.
They added, “Edit: Some have mentioned that after you click ‘Cancel’, wait about a day or so. Apparently, it takes some time and it showed up after for some.”

Just like the OP, we can’t confirm that this secret hack will work every time, however, for some users it’s scored them a cheaper subscription as promised.
“Worked for me, now I see the $119.99 before I was seeing $159.99,” commented Section_80.
“It works but I had to wait,” said Tadpole-Jackson. “It took about a day for it to update and give me the option for a discount on my current tier after cancelling.”
There are even more comments that say this tip doesn’t work.

But there’s no harm in trying, especially if you feel the same way as dangeruser who says they’re “sick of Sony’s shit”.
