PlayStation Plus price hike leaves games angrier than ever

PlayStation Plus price hike leaves games angrier than ever

The 35% increase in price has left several PlayStation gamers furious

Over on the r/PlayStationPlus subreddit, folks have been sharing their thoughts regarding recent PlayStation Plus subscription increases… and they aren’t holding back.

Back in 2023, Sony increased the price of the PlayStation Plus subscription options by a whopping 20% - or, worse, 35% if you’re in America.

This raised the price of an annual essential tier subscription from £49.99 to £59.99, which might not seem extortionate on paper.

However, with the cost of living having gradually increased over the past few years, many were likely considering cancelling their subscriptions even before the price was raised.

While Sony has revealed that it's raking in an extra 18% more revenue from PlayStation Plus subscriptions since then, this might not paint the full picture - especially when compared against the 20% price increase.

The mass majority of folks over on r/PlayStationPlus have voiced their anger at this news, with many sharing that they’ve since cancelled their subscriptions entirely.

“I was subbed for 12 years straight and the price hikes finally convinced me to cancel it,” stated WeWereInfinite. “Funny thing I noticed when cancelling it was they ask why you're cancelling and one of the options is, 'I need to control my finances'. Not 'Your s**t is too expensive'. They word it like it's your fault.”

“I'm slowly transitioning to PC again because of these practices,” replied b16ZZ-. “The Pro console is also a joke. I don't intend to give as much money to Sony anymore, I'd rather give it to a customer-friendly service like Steam when I can also get access to games on portable devices like the Steam Deck with just a single copy bought.”

Ultimately, the price increases do seem a little misguided, given that many are currently struggling to afford rent and basic necessities and therefore don’t have much disposable cash to spend on luxuries like online subscriptions.

Only time will tell if the decision to permanently raise the price of PlayStation Plus will prove to be short-sighted in the long run.
