Was it a mistake or a sign of things to come? Sony accidentally made one of their most popular RPGs free on PlayStation Plus for a short time before removing it.
It was likely a slip-up somewhere at Sony HQ, but for a while, players could download the game for free and it even worked with saves from the retail version of the game.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a masterpiece from 2024 and will likely be on plenty of end of year lists
The game in question is the console-exclusive, Final Fantasy XVI. Though the game has recently come to PC, it’s still only available on PlayStation 5.

While this does seem like a mistake, it does bring up the question of whether Sony has an agreement with Square Enix to bring the game to PlayStation Plus at some point in the near future.
Especially as the game worked with save files from the retail version of the game, and even loaded up from the retail installation files.
Given the game has been out for a while now, and it’s now jumped to PC, this could give players another reason to subscribe to the monthly service.
As one user on Twitter points out, it’s older than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so the inclusion of the RPG would make sense financially.

Sadly, Sony noticed this error swiftly and soon removed the ability to download the game.
We’ll have to wait and see whether this is realised in the future and readded to the catalogue.
This could also be an indication that the game will come up soon for a PlayStation Plus Trial, which gives user the opportunity to play a game for a few hours, as an extended demo.
Of course, this is all speculation, so don’t get your hopes up too high.

If you did manage to download it in that short window, hopefully, you enjoyed what you played and get to finish the adventure soon.
