If you’re a PlayStation 4 user looking to upgrade to a PlayStation 5, you may want to check your emails. Select users are being sent a fantastic new offer where, if you choose to upgrade to a PS5, you get a game totally for free.
It may be the perfect time to upgrade to a PS5. Many of us will have enjoyed the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PlayStation 4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales then arrived in 2020 on both PS4 and PS5, once again meeting the demands of all. In the last year though, we’ve seen a big current-gen shift. Unlike last year’s major release God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to be a PS5 exclusive. We don’t know much about Sony’s first party release date beyond that but it’s safe to assume that we’ll be seeing more PS5-exclusive releases next year, so a new offer may be the perfect opportunity to upgrade.
Take a look at our preview of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 below.
Reddit user Icy_Fig8244 was the first to spot the offer. The email read, “You’re eligible for a free PS5 game when you upgrade today [...] Exclusive offer: Free choice of select games when you buy a PS5 console.” Interesting. The accompanying graphic seemed to imply that Returnal, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Demon Souls, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, The Last of Us Part I, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart are all eligible game options.

As mentioned, it’s an invite only offer, so you’ll need to check your emails and see if you’re one the lucky few. Naturally, this offer is likely only going to be of interest if you were thinking of getting a PS5 soon anyway. It’s hardly a spur of the moment purchase.
It's also only valid for US residents which narrows down the pool of PS4 users who’ll actually need to check their emails. Fellow Reddit user Educational-Coat4344 wrote, “Yes. I have gotten this email too and upgraded. Couldn't be happier with my PS5 and The Last of Us,” while clashman325 added, “Bruh I got this email like six days after I got a PS5.” Unlucky.
