According to a new leak, the PlayStation 6 might be hitting store shelves sometime in Q4 of 2027 - which is, understandably, not particularly great news for a lot of folks.
The info in question comes from a very well-regarded leaker by the name of KelperL2 over on the NeoGAG forum, which has since been collated in a thread over on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit.
Now if you’re looking at some of the words in that title (like for instance “pre-si validation” and “A0 tapeout) and scratching your head in confusion, then here’s a quick breakdown for you.

Basically it means “it’s sort of almost ready.” If you want a more detailed explanation, it means that the electronic guts of the console are in their post-design phase and that Sony is moving forward with its testing phase.
But here comes the interesting part: based on information from both the PS4’s and PS5’s production timelines, this should mean that the PlayStation 6 is roughly two years away from launching.
So why are people not feeling particularly excited about this news? Well, to a lot of people (myself included) it sort of doesn’t feel like the PS5 is old enough to be retired yet.
“So the PS5 released November 2020, meaning the A0 gate tapeout occurs 5 years after the PS5 release,” commented user MicroeconomicBunsen.

“Two years after that means the PS5 would be between 6 and 7 years old, which is the age the PS4 was when the PS5 released… It still feels to me like the PS5 is a "new" console but uh time doesn't lie.”
We’ll have to wait for some kind of official reveal on Sony’s behalf before we can confirm any of this but… it just doesn’t feel like this generation is worth leaving behind yet to me.
Personally I’m good with waiting until 2029, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge once we get to it.
