If you’ve turned on your PlayStation in recent days, you may have noticed that a new system software update has landed.
As always, the update brings us a couple of handy new features although rather annoyingly, one of the most useful is only available on certain console models.
While we’re still awaiting the reveal of the rumoured PlayStation 5 Pro, you can now get your hands on the PlayStation 5 Slim.

The PS5 Slim is, as the name suggests, less bulky than the base console. You will need to buy a detachable disc drive if you’re a user of physical media.
There is no built-in disc drive option. The PlayStation 5 Slim also has a 1TB SSD compared to the original PS5’s 825GB SSD.
Following the latest beta system update, the PS5 Slim will now be able to boast one more unique feature: adaptive charging.
ICYMI: Astro Bot launches in September. Take a look at the game in action below.
Basically, adaptive charging ‘adapts’ how the PlayStation 5 supplies power to USB ports while the console is in Rest Mode.

Namely, this helps preserve the battery health of what is most likely going to be your DualSense controller.
Adaptive charging will consider the battery level of your controller to determine how much power it needs to draw to reach a full charge.
The end result is that your DualSense won’t be overcharged and your console won’t overexert needless energy.
This could be a very useful feature should you find yourself relying on a Rest Mode charge often.

Personally, I swear by the DualSense docking station. I haven’t had to think about charging my controller in years. It’s simply always ready to go and never runs out on me.
If you do rely on doing it the old-fashioned way though, it’s well worth sampling this beta feature if it’s available to you.
Whether this feature will one day rollout on the base PS5, we don’t know. But it’s not out of the question.
