New 'PlayStation' console unveiled, set to launch this year

Meet the SuperStation One

How this hasn’t been nuked by Sony, I do not know.

An unofficial emulation of Sony’s PlayStation 1 will soon be appearing on the market, titled the SuperStation One.

The console was unveiled by developer Taki Udon who describes it as “the world’s first affordable FPGA gaming console, inspired by the PlayStation 1”.

The SuperStation One “supports PS1 games, memory cards, and controllers”, with analogue and digital outputs as well NFC, WiFi, and Bluetooth connections.

I should stress though that the base SuperStation One will only support digital copies of PlayStation 1 games such as those stored on a memory card.

You’ll need to add an external disc-drive, very Sony-esque, if you want to play your old discs.

The console is available in white and black, with grey, blue, and transparent blue editions also teased - and I have to say, the transparent blue is a wonderful nostalgic blast from the past.

PlayStation 5 users have Ghost of Yōtei to look forward to.

If you want to pick up the SuperStation One, it’ll set you back $149.99 but do remember, that’s digital only.

Pre-orders are due to go live on 25 January, at 9pm EST.

The current price point of $149.99 is described as being aimed at “founders and friends”, i.e. those who order early.

Mark your calendars. It would be uncharacteristic of me to not have this in transparent blue. Should we make it?

That leads me to believe that the SuperStation One will rise in price eventually so that’s probably worth bearing in mind.

In fact, the founder’s edition is described as being available at a “huge discount” so perhaps it'll be more of a price hike than a small rise.

If you do pick up the founder’s edition of this console, it’ll reportedly feature the signature of the full RR team on the inside of the shell.

Of course, the other option is to seek out a second hand PlayStation 1 but finding one in good condition at a reasonable price isn’t the most straightforward of tasks.

While the SuperStation One does seemingly risk a few copyright infringements, it definitely looks like a great bit of kit for those interested in experiencing some classic gaming greats.
