It is not a very good time to be a Red Dead Redemption fan, I think it's fair to say.
Earlier this week Rockstar Games announced the long-rumoured Red Dead Redemption re-release - assumed by many to be a remaster or remake using Red Dead Redemption 2's engine. Alas, it turned out to be a straight port of the original game for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Needless to say, fans have made their feelings known. Quite aside from the outrage over charging £40 for a straight port of a 13-year-old game, fans are wondering why Red Dead Redemption still hasn't been announced for PC. Given that Red Dead Redemption 2 and a slew of other Rockstar titles are available via Steam, it's baffling that the original remains unavailable.
Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon for a PC port of Red Dead Redemption. Speaking to IGN, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that whether or not we get a PC port is effectively up to the teams behind the game, which is a rather convenient way of shifting the blame when you quite literally run the company.
"It depends on the vision that the creative teams have for a title, and in the absence of having a powerful vision, for something that we would do with a title, we might bring it in its original form," Zelnick explained when asked how they decide whether to re-release ports or go for remasters/remakes.
"We've done that, and in certain instances we might remaster or remake, so it really depends on the title and how the label feels about it, the platform, and what we think the opportunity is for consumers."

Given the sheer demand for Red Dead Redemption on PC - not to mention the opportunities modders would have - I'd be amazed if we didn't get it sooner rather than later. But as most Red Dead Redemption fans know all-too well by now, it's the hope that kills you.
