Gather around my PC gaming friends. You can now grab the excellent Golden Light completely for free, no strings attached. Well if that’s not a Friday treat, I don’t know what is.
Developed by Mr. Pink and published by HypeTrain Digital, Golden Light is a ‘survival horror first-person shooter prop hunt roguelike’, with both co-op and versus modes. Yes, that’s quite a wordy genre but it about sums things up. The game is set in the unpleasantly titled ‘Meat Zone’ where you’re hunted by props. The dark comedy tasks you with descending into the depths of The Gut in order to save a loved one. You’re probably thinking, Kate, this sounds rather zany - and it’s true. That’s exactly what Golden Light is but it’s a part of the game’s charm.
Take a look at Golden Light in action below.
Curious to know what else Golden Light features? Well, there are procedural levels, randomised weapons, procedural spooks, a talking bicycle, a talking ‘dude in the toilet’, and multiple items you can choose to either eat or throw including a bat head, corrupted foetus, fish head, ‘fat lips’, meat apple, and more. I did say the game was a tad, well, strange.

If you head on over to the Epic Games Store, it is completely free to download right now, and you can keep it forever with no strings attached. Normally, the game retails at £16.49 so it’s a nice saving. The offer runs out on 16 November at 4PM so I’d grab it sooner rather than later if you’re interested. It’s so easy to delay these things in your mind only to remember when it’s too late.
If you take a look at Golden Light’s reviews on fellow PC site Steam, you’ll see that it's got a respectable 93% Very Positive approval score. “Strange would be an understatement … I love it,” wrote one user, while another added, “I cannot recommend this game strongly enough. The first layer is a terrifying and unsettling survival horror, but dig a bit deeper and you’re taken on a surreal trip.” One review simply stated, “Never has the statement, ‘I think there’s a vending machine heading your way’ filled me with so much fear.” I personally am eerily intrigued.
