Without question, the Fallout series is one of the most important and popular video game franchises of all time that has immersed millions of players for decades in its post-apocalyptic wasteland.

The Fallout series began back in 1997 quite a few years before Bethesda Softworks acquired the licence. However, ever since Bethesda launched its first entry in the series with Fallout 3 in 2008 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the franchise went from strength to strength and evolved into the juggernaut that it is today.

Recently, the Fallout series has garnered even more fans thanks to the live-action adaptation from Amazon Studios on Prime Video which resulted in a surge of players revisiting (or for the first time) the likes of Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, the latter of which recently benefited from a free new-gen update.

Yet, one game that fans will not be able to visit was a cancelled project from 2003 or at least, they weren't able to until now. In 2003, we were close to getting a version of Fallout 3 which was similar to the first two games in the series (which wouldn't have been a bad thing).

Unfortunately, that project was cancelled but a talented and dedicated indie developer has brought this cancelled Fallout 3 project from 2003 to life. Courtesy of the Patreon page PJ & Co, the cancelled project that had the codename Van Buren is a total conversion mod for Fallout 2 and is available to download now for free.

The revived project which takes place in the American southwest tells the story of a scientist who had a burning desire to wipe all mutant life forms from the planet. The free download brings 30 new quests, over 100 new weapons, over 100 new traits and perks, as well as an improved user interface and much more.

Of course, this revived Fallout 3 project is only playable on PC but it shouldn't be too demanding for most systems. As for the aforementioned Fallout show (which you really should check out), all episodes are available now on Prime Video.
