Don't miss out on these

A bunch of freebies are up for grabs on the Nintendo Switch right now, and Super Mario fans will love them.

We’re calling them freebies because they’re icons acquired through Nintendo Platinum Points, a type of currency you accrue through playing various games on your Nintendo Switch, answering surveys etc.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership marks the return of the beloved RPG series, check out the trailer below

Icons are used to customise your Nintendo Switch profile picture, and at the time of writing there a lot of options available spanning several game series.

They’re not all bangers, and it’s a poor substitute to the Miis from the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U, but they do the job.

If you like collecting them all or just have a fondness for the Super Mario series, you’ll want to check out the latest icons on offer.

Super Mario Wonder, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey all get representation in the newest selection, with characters like Mario himself, Luigi, Toad etc all getting a shot at the spotlight.

These icons will set you back 10 coins each but as said before, acquiring the coins is incredibly simple, and you’ve probably got a hefty supply already without even realising it.

The only downside to these icons is you can’t mix and match, as the character pictures will only pair with the backgrounds and frames of that specific set, not another one.

It’s a weird system but not much of a surprise for Nintendo, as the company is yet to give us Nintendo Switch background themes years after the console’s launch.

Perhaps they're saving the more expressive features for the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever the successor is going to be called.

You’ve got until 2 September to grab whatever icons you want from the current selection, as after that date it’ll be updated again.
