This week saw yet another Nintendo Direct hit our screens and alongside some exciting new titles, there was one classic that stood out.
Yesterday saw the Indie World Showcase and Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase air which included over 40 minutes of news about upcoming titles.

With a lot to cover during the livestream, it was easy to get overwhelmed with all the future Nintendo titles but it was one in particular which stood out for fans of the classics.

That’s right, Nintendo is expanding its Switch Online NES library by adding Tetris this winter.
The NES version of Tetris which dates back to 1989/90 is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch later this year as part of Nintendo’s plan to revive the classics.
Although we did not receive an official release date, we did see a sneak peek of the game towards the end of the Tetris Forever trailer.
Not only that but this will be the first time Japan receives the Nintendo version of the NES title.

Tetris will be joining the Switch’s NES library alongside some much-loved titles such as Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, EarthBound Beginnings and Ninja Gaiden.
To be eligible to play, you must of course own a Nintendo Switch and also be a member of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Other than that, it is completely free.
“If I recall correctly, this is the first time the NES version of Tetris has ever been rereleased,” one fan said about the news.

“That’s neat. The Tengen version on the NES is better in just about every way, but that thing’s never gonna see the light of day again, so this is a neat consolation prize.”
Another said, “I'm more excited about Tetris Forever announced at the same Direct, but I've never played the NES version of Tetris so I will definitely check it out. The more Tetrises (Tetrii?) the better.”
I quite agree.
