Could we be getting an Injustice 3? It would seem so.
With each new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, we get more pumped about what’s to come when the game launches on 14 September. But now we’re also getting ridiculously excited over the possible return of the Injustice series.
Get ready for no mercy with the MK1 official gameplay debut!
During an interview with ComicBook during the Gamescom 2023 MK1 preview, NetherRealm Studio’s Ed Boon revealed that they’ve got plenty of ideas about where to take Injustice 3, should it ever happen. “The way it works with me at least, I can't speak about everybody else, is I always have a notepad file on my computer with ideas of like, 'Oh, we could do this, we could do that',” they explained. “And I started an Injustice 3 one when we were on Injustice 2. There's always a hit list of ideas and concepts – look into this, look into that. So there's absolutely a file that exists.”

Although we now know that there’s a notebook filled to the brim with ideas for this DC fighter, NetherRealm’s current focus is Mortal Kombat 1. That being said, this isn’t the first time Boon has discussed the return of Injustice 3, having previously said a simple “not at all” to questions on whether the door had firmly been shut on the Injustice franchise. It felt like a promising update, though one that held no timeframe whatsoever. While there’s been a couple of occasions now where Boon has voiced their love for the series, they’re tidbits of a promise, not a full-blown confirmation that the game will happen. With the likelihood of that confirmation lessening everyday.
For now, we look to NetherRealm Studio to deliver the visceral Mortal Kombat game everyone of us has been begging for – we want gore, we want to wince, and we really want to stick it to anyone who underestimates our skills. Basically, we want to KO everyone until we win. Not that we’ve given it much thought. Fortunately, the toe-curling fatalities we’ve already witnessed in the trailers are only the beginning, and I for one am so glad.
If you’re not one for extreme violence, perhaps you should sit out MK1 and relax with a more cosy game, like the upcoming RPG Sea of Stars. There’ll still be fighting in that, but it’s not gruesome in the slightest.
Mortal Kombat 1 will launch on 14 September, and will be available for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
