Exploring the Wasteland alone isn’t advisable, though neither is just having one companion by your side.

Due to the numerous enemies standing between you and your end goal, it makes sense to have as many allies with you to fight them off.

The problem here is that Fallout 4 only allows you to travel with one companion at a time.

We'll soon be able to become a ghoul in Fallout 76

It’s a frustrating part of this Bethesda adventure.

To players’ surprise, it doesn’t need to be; you can actually have multiple companions travelling with you.

However, there’s a specific way to unlock this feature.

Shared on the Fallout 4 subreddit, Ill-Honeydew3332 discovered that starting the ‘Taking Independence’ quest but choosing to leave thereafter, ensures Preston follows you.

Not only does he follow, but he also helps dispatch enemies that attack you, essentially behaving like a genuine companion.

The only downside is that Preston won’t talk to you.

If you’re not a big Preston fan, that likely won’t be a problem.

Fans who already knew about this detail also revealed that such a trick proves useful when you’re attempting to keep your kill count at zero.

“You do that method if you want to have 0 kills as their kills don't count towards your kill meter. So yes, not only it is a popular strategy, it is also used for weird playthroughs,” explained KostasP666.

Apparently, this isn’t the only instance in which you can cheat the system.

“If you take Nick along with you and use Dogmeat for the quest to find Kellogg, they will both respond to your commands and talk to you and act like companions,” said shaggy887-_-.

The next time you need more than one ally by your side, make sure to rely on this neat trick to keep those enemies at bay.
