There have been many fan favourite RPG video games over the years, perhaps way too many to mention from franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Elder Scrolls and much more.
One video game that can be mentioned as today’s topic of discussion is the original Fable developed by Big Blue Box Studios released for the Xbox in 2004. Fable is an action RPG and as the name of the game suggests, it’s based on fairy tales of old and with it comes classic British humour as well as violence against chickens for some reason.
Check out the trailer for the original Fable below!
“Once a young boy has obtained a gift for his sister's birthday, bandits attack his home village of Oakvale,” reads the synopsis of the game. “A member of the Hero's Guild, Maze, stumbles upon the boy, saves him and takes the boy to the Guild to be raised as a hero.”

Fans have been longing for the series to make a triumphant return and that wish was granted when the new Fable was announced in July 2023. It will be developed by Forza Horizon 5 studio Playground Games and will serve as a reboot for the series. Hopefully, the new Fable game will take some creative risks, a concern recently expressed by the series creator.
On Reddit, fans have been sharing their appreciation for the Fable game that was released nearly 20 years ago. “The original Fable had one of the greatest atmospheres,” said Redditor extraterrestrialsoul kicking off the discussion on the thread.

“I know Fable isn’t a perfect game, but I love the vibe/mediaeval setting. The art direction makes it stand out from every other RPG,” they continued. “I think the quirky/magical soundtrack also plays a big part in it. The game has so much charm. I really hope they don't mess up the new Fable game because the original has a special place in my heart.”
“The original Fable is one of my favourite Western RPGs. The area with the arena is my favourite,” replied RedXIII1888. “I absolutely agree, the original had this fairytale vibe that was irresistible. It made the world a fun place to explore, even if the gameplay was a bit basic,” said singh853. “Fable was one of my favourites, that Darkwood mission guiding the traders always put me on edge,” exclaimed Hamncheese.
At the time of writing this article, the new Fable game does not have a release date, but we do know that it will be released on PC and Xbox Series X|S. What's more, with it being a Microsoft first-party title, it will also launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.
