There is still no official news of the future of Silent Hill. It's been a decade since the last game, and the cancellation of Silent Hills and the PT fiasco is still fresh in our minds. It's hard not to wonder whether or not the franchise really is a thing of the past. It's a shame, because the franchise's trademark psychological horror would be brilliant with our current technology; dare I say it, VR?
There have been a few decent psychological horrors in the meantime though; The Evil Within 1+2, Soma, Martha is Dead, for example. Now, there might be a new contender; The Mortuary Assistant, which is being billed as a combination of Silent Hill and Five Nights at Freddy's.
In the meantime, check out this fan made remake of the school section of the original Silent Hill.
The Mortuary Assistant, developed by DarkStone Digital (the indie devs behind horrors Kohate and Our Secret Below), puts us in the shoes of a morgue assistant called in for an unexpected night shift. So far, so Five Nights at Freddy's.

It's more than a few jump scares from animatronic teddy bears though, because the creatures here really are terrifying. And things start to get psychological. As you perform your nocturnal duties you'll see things in the corner of your eye, and wonder if you saw it or not.
Let's not forget the morbid details of your job, too; dressing the bodies, embalming, making jugular incisions (sorry if you're a mortuary assistant). It's a difficult profession for which you'd need a tough psychological fortitude. Something tells us that the protagonist of this game doesn't, and, as a result, we're in for a terrifying experience.
The Mortuary Assistant is available to download on Steam now, if you think you're brave enough.
