After the recent success of Netflix’s One Piece season one, the showrunners are reportedly in talks to bring acting legend Jamie Lee Curtis onto the cast as Dr. Kureha.
The live-action adaptation of One Piece burst onto our Netflix accounts this August and was met with huge praise despite initial reservations. Only a week after it aired, it had managed to earn overwhelmingly positive reviews and hit Netflix’s Top 10 TV chart in 84 different countries. Telling the story of Monkey D Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirate crew, the show follows their adventures as they search for hidden treasures. Based on the anime with the same name that first aired in 1999, it still continues to this day with an incredibly loyal fanbase.

After the success of season one, One Piece co-showrunner Matt Owens and the rest of the team are reportedly hoping they can get Hollywood legend Jamie Lee Curtis on the show, playing the role of Dr. Kureha. The rumours started after Curtis herself took to social media to reveal she was a big fan of the anime and would like to be a part of the live-action adaptation.

“Once the strike against the greed of the AMTPT is settled with a fair contract, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha,” she said on an Instagram post. This was soon viewed by Owens who replied, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let’s talk!”
Since then, Owens talked more about the potential partnership during an interview with Deadline. When asked if fans could expect Curtis in One Piece season two, he said, “we tried to start manifesting this dream of ours. After she won her Oscar, the writer’s room sent her a figure of Doctor Kureha with a nice note that said, “Congratulations on your statue, here’s another one to put next to it. Hope to speak to you soon.”
“When she reposted that, it got a lot of fan interest, and I commented on it… as soon as there can be, I’m ready”, he continued. “I will take her out to dinner, we’ll talk about it. We’ll do all of it because at this point we’re writing for her — we really, really want her to come and play with us in Season 2.”
It remains to be seen if Curtis will take on the role of Dr. Kureha but she will definitely be an exciting addition to the One Piece cast.
