Need for Speed Underground 2 remains ‘best of the franchise’, fans agree on Reddit.

The Need for Speed franchise has been around for longer than most of us may have realised. What started off as a relatively unknown racer for PC and consoles nearly 30 years ago in 1994, for better or worse, it has now become one of the most popular racing franchises on the planet.

Yet, it’s fair to say that it's been a while since this franchise has been at its best. To be fair, the latest entry, Need for Speed Unbound released this year is probably the best the series has been for a while.

However, for some, this iconic series hasn't been at its best since 2003 with Need for Speed Underground. That being said, when its sequel arrived a year later, it had improved on its predecessor in almost every way.

Need for Speed Underground 2 had it all, solid gameplay on neon-lite streets in the fictional city of Bayview, robust customisation, a fun story and last but not least, an epic soundtrack to boot.

In the last few years or so, we’ve also seen some decent remasters with the most recent being Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered in 2020. So it stands to reason that fans have been calling for the Underground games to receive the same treatment. While there is no sign of that happening just yet, fans have been discussing their love for Underground 2 on Reddit.

“Nostalgic and best one of the franchise,” Redditor cable010 opened up the discussion on the thread. “Oh man, the first time hitting that nitrous and seeing the world streak up,” reminisced stylezLP. “I wanna mention that the original Most Wanted was a close 2nd to me behind this game.”

“It was a way more simple time back then, coming back to school with nothing to worry about except what’s for dinner & what mods I’m gonna deck my cars out with lol,” said a nostalgic Molotov320. “Still the best in the franchise in my opinion,” said cyanideh1gh.

It’s unclear what publisher Electronic Arts will do with this series next. We could get another new entry in the series or perhaps it's the beloved Need for Speed Underground or its sequel that could be next in line for the remaster treatment. Only time will tell.
