Neil Druckmann took to the stage at the 2022 Summer Game Fest presentation to reveal the first-ever official look at what Naughty Dog is making as its standalone, The Last Of Us-themed multiplayer game.
Druckmann, who is co-president at the developer and wrote both The Last of Us - coming soon, remade, to PlayStation 5 - and its Part II sequel, told presenter Geoff Keighley that this currently-unnamed title is potentially bigger than any of the single-player games that Naughty Dog has made so far. It started life as a multiplayer component to The Last of Us Part II, but has since grown and grown and is now, well, something much larger indeed.

I mean, that’s San Francisco, isn’t it, surely. Somewhere previous TLOU games haven't gone to. The game’s being made by veteran devs that worked on both the Uncharted and TLOU series, and Druckmann had this to say about it: “What started out as a multiplayer mode has evolved because of the team’s ambition. They really wanted to do something we’ve never done before at Naughty Dog, and we felt the way to do it justice was to make it a standalone title. They’ve been working on it for the past two years, and ambition has grown, but we’re not quite ready to unveil it yet.”
Druckmann said that the way the studio is telling a story in this game is “very unique”, that it has an all-new cast of characters, and added that more of this multiplayer title will be shown next year, in 2023. A while to wait then - but he did also hint that the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us might not be too far off from being released; and of course there’s the remake of the original to tide fans over until we see more of this new game.
And if you missed the news about The Last of Us remake - now called The Last of Us Part I - do feast your peepers on the footage below.
