A live-action Pac-Man film is in development because the world is burning and what we truly need is to lift our spirits with a plucky tale from one of the most iconic characters in gaming.
Obviously this isn't the direction that Bandai Namco Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios will opt for, but my first instinct was to turn this into a horror film. This might be a damning indictment on my mental outlook, but, creator Toru Iwatani, once said that the inspiration behind Pac-Man was pizza without a slice so he would look like "an animated pizza, racing through a maze and eating things with its absent-slice mouth."

He could come to life from a cursed arcade machine, emerge from the screen, and stalk the characters throughout the house, never satiated and relentless in his hunt. It could be a whole commentary on capitalism and everything. Anyway.

The report from The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the plot of the live-action Pac-Man film will be an original idea from Chuck Williams, who was one of the producers of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog film. Of course, those two Sonic films are hugely successful, and the sequel is the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America. So the Pac-Man film is in safe hands, even if we're not totally sure how the story will go.
