Hogwarts Legacy players keep arguing over missing feature

Hogwarts Legacy players keep arguing over missing feature

Hogwarts Legacy players have been arguing over a missing feature in the game - the inability to alter your wand.

Hogwarts Legacy players keep arguing over a missing customisation feature in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy has a decent number of character customisation options relating to height, skin colour, gender and hair - plus once your story begins, you can dress and accessorise your character as you please. Early on in your adventure, you will also select your wand from Ollivanders. Here, you can choose your style of wand, colour and handle. However, once your choice is made, you cannot select a different wand. It’s with you throughout the campaign.

Ollivanders can be found in Hogsmeade. Enjoy a tour of Hogsmeade below.

The reason why is that in the Wizarding World, the bond between wizard/witch and their wand is sacred. Furthermore, according to official lore, the wand chooses you, not the other way around. This is likely to be why the developers of Avalanche Software made it so you can’t choose a different wand once the choice is made. That being said, you can change the handle as you collect varying designs on your travels.

Still, fans have been discussing on Reddit whether players should have the choice of customisation in-game. That’s not to say that all players want that choice, as some are happy with Hogwarts Legacy remaining true to its lore. “Why can’t we change our wand? I picked the 'ringed' option and it looks goofy with all the cool handles,” said mynameescapesmern.

“There's a ton of handles, don't worry. You'll find one that suits it," replied NoBreeches. “But it's basically taboo to ask this question. Wands are not meant to be changed, they're meant to be sort of like lifelong partners of the wizard who carries it.”

Another Redditor counters that argument by stating that according to lore, wands can be changed, should they be broken. What’s more, in later Harry Potter entries, wands were known to switch allegiance thus suggesting that the game could have used this as a workaround.

“That's not entirely accurate. Broken wands generally cannot be repaired. Ron Weasley, for example, had to buy a new wand after it was broken in The Chamber of Secrets," explained DraconicZombie. “For the sake of customisation, one could say their wand broke and they had to find another. The later entries in the Harry Potter series pretty much all but tell you outright you can have and use more than one wand,” they continued. “Draco's swapped allegiance to Harry after he disarmed him, and later the Elder Wand was also Harry's, and before all that, it was evidently Grindelwald's before Dumbledore took possession of it between the 1920s and 1990s.”

In other Hogwarts Legacy news, the PS4 and Xbox One versions have been delayed even further and fans have been roasting the game following the disappointing news.

Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It will then release for PS4 and Xbox One on 5 May 2023, followed by the Nintendo Switch on 25 July.
