While it may not have picked up any nominations at this year’s The Game Awards, Hogwarts Legacy has just nabbed itself its first Game of the Year nod.
What Hogwarts Legacy lacks in critical fanfare, it certainly makes up for in commercial success. According to Google, Hogwarts Legacy was 2023’s most searched for game, which is no surprise really when you consider that by May, sales had surpassed $1 billion. Since then, the Nintendo Switch version has been released plus we’ve seen discounts galore on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC versions so I’m imagining that figure has only continued to grow. While no sequel has yet been announced, it looks as if devs are hiring for one. I’m sure those devs would be delighted to see this nomination.

Hogwarts Legacy is one of five nominees for The Steam Awards’ Game of the Year award. It’ll go up against EA Sports FC24, Baldur’s Gate 3, Lethal Company, and Resident Evil 4. Admittedly, you’d expect Baldur’s Gate 3 to win as it did at The Game Awards, but then again, this is a fan-voted award. It’s all to play for.

It also picked up a nomination for Best Game on Steam Deck. Just wait though, there’s more. Hogwarts Legacy has also been recognised in several category longlists at the upcoming BAFTA Games Awards. These longlists will then be narrowed down in order to select the final nominees but so far, Hogwarts Legacy could be in the running for Best Animation, Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best Game, Game Design, Best Music, Best Narrative, Technical Achievement, and Best Family Game.
Hogwarts Legacy could end up with nine nominations, but equally it could end with zero if it fails to make any shortlist. Its Steam Awards nomination cannot be refuted though. Will it take home the coveted prize? Time will tell.
