Although 2023 saw the arrival of Hogwarts Legacy, some fans are still holding out hope for a remake of the original 2000s Harry Potter games. With no signs of this happening, self-taught developers are turning to Unreal Engine 5 to recreate the nostalgic titles.
First released back in 2001 for the PlayStation and PC, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the first video game inspired by the book series with the same name. It was followed by sequels that were released across console, PC and handheld between 2001 and 2013 with Hogwarts Legacy arriving in 2023 as a standalone title by Avalanche Software.

Although some instalments were hit and miss due to a variety of different developer studios trying its hand at the much-loved franchise, the original early 2000s Harry Potter games are still loved to this day. So much so that one YouTuber, Ripper Junkie, has created a concept trailer for a Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone remake built on Unreal Engine 5.

“So, I am a big fan of the Harry Potter old-school video games that were released during the early 2000s era,” they wrote. “I especially love the first three Harry Potter games and the fifth one. I am a game developer and I thought that it would be a good idea to remake some game mechanics from those games so that we can get a taste of what it would look like as a remade version. I am using Unreal Engine 5 with pre-made assets to boost the development.”
The trailer shows us just over two-minutes of footage of a 2001 Harry Potter game remake and we see Harry as he summons his broom and takes to the skies. What follows is a look at the environment Ripper Junkie has managed to create which maintains the original look of the games with a modern-day twist. It isn’t long before Harry encounters a dragon that flies alongside him over a sunlit scene.
With Hogwarts Legacy cementing itself as one of the most popular titles of 2023 despite not being nominated for any awards at The Game Awards, it seems as though fans are still wanting more from the long-running franchise. Whether or not we will see remakes of the original 2000s games remains to be seen.
