There’s a lot to praise in Hogwarts Legacy, but there’s also plenty that can be criticised. Avalanche Software’s wizarding title has the foundations of a great game, but players couldn’t help but feel disappointed with a number of areas.
It’s likely we’ll see major improvements made in a Hogwarts Legacy sequel seeing as the game has generated over $1 billion. The announcement of a sequel is surely only a matter of time. Many have hailed Hogwarts as one of their favourite video game locations ever, but the rest of the open-world leaves much to be desired with fans saying devs ‘grossly exaggerated’ the depth of the game. Ahead of release, branching paths, a companion system, and a morality system were all seemingly cut. Typically, Hogwarts’ design is left out of the game’s criticism but many players are actually in agreement that the Grand Staircase is, well, not that grand.

Reddit user readytogohomenow said, “I’m thoroughly disappointed with the Grand Staircase. [...] The Grand Staircase in the game is one of the biggest letdowns and I just can’t get over it. For starters, nothing of real importance is off the Grand Staircase. It could really be called the passage to nowhere with how little it connects to. [...] It just kind of feels like a dead end. I wish that it was more like the Grand Staircase in the fifth game where it had corridors that led to classrooms and other things.”

They continued, “The biggest disappointment though is that it doesn’t move. It disappears, but the stairs are always in the same place. I wanted that ‘s**t I needed that’ stair drama that was in the books and movies. I wanted to see this bastion of stairs that was ever changing, but instead there’s just a spiral staircase leading to some pretty uneventful areas.”
Plenty of fellow players agreed. “I completely agree,” TheLegoHPfan said, while Meat_Freaky added, “Not even a trick step you had to remember to jump.” Inspector_Beyond said, “I'm also disappointed with it. It's supposed to be the heart of Hogwarts, but in result it's just a boring spiral staircase that leads to four places. I hope it will be completely redesigned in the sequel, as it's way too horrible.” I guess Hogwarts could undergo a renovation but it seems unlikely. Instead, I’m imagining we’ll see some brand new magical locations.
