Despite a five-year streak, Call of Duty will not take the spot of best-selling game of 2023 with the award instead heading to the Avalanche Software title, Hogwarts Legacy.
With the first entry releasing way back in 2003, the Call of Duty franchise has gone on to dominate the gaming world, especially with the FPS becoming the best-selling game in the US every year (minus three) since 2009.

Although Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was released back in November and was one of the most-anticipated releases of 2023, it was pipped to the post by Hogwarts Legacy which has become the best-selling game of the year in the U.S.

This news comes courtesy of GamesIndustry.biz who recently released a report detailing the global games market values, the best selling games of 2023 and more. It was during this report that it was revealed Hogwarts Legacy came out on top which marks the first time Call of Duty has lost out since Red Dead Redemption 2 won back in 2018.
That didn’t stop Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from coming second-place followed by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. In tenth place sits Bethesda’s Starfield which despite recently being ditched by modders because the game is “trash”, still managed to perform relatively well in the charts.
Hogwarts Legacy also came out on top in the U.K. charts but it was pipped to the post by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in Japan.
In related news, despite initially being snubbed at The Game Awards, Hogwarts Legacy has finally been nominated for an award - The Steam Awards’ Game of the Year. Going up against EA Sports FC24, Baldur’s Gate 3, Lethal Company, and Resident Evil 4, it has some tough competition but it’s nice to see the title recognised at last.
