In little over a month since its launch, Hogwarts Legacy has already managed to surpass the sales of 2022’s Game of the Year winner in the UK.
Elden Ring completely took over the internet when it launched, and quickly became FromSoftware’s best selling game. Despite winning the greatest accolade at The Game Awards, and everyone’s hype for the game being reignited by the newly announced Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Elden Ring has met its match. That's not at all surprising when you consider that we’re looking at a highly anticipated game based on one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time. Hogwarts Legacy had sold 12 million copies worldwide just two weeks after its launch, and quickly solidified itself as the most successful Harry Potter game of all time. This is despite the fact that many decided to boycott it due to its association with J.K. Rowling, who continues to face criticism for making harmful remarks about the trans community.
Elden Ring isn’t the only big title that seen its sales surpassed by Hogwarts Legacy. In Europe, it’s topped the sales of every Call of Duty game released since 2017, as well as Red Dead Redemption 2. In fact, it’s the sixth-biggest launch since European sales charts began - the five titles still above it are all FIFA games.
It seems unlikely that Hogwarts Legacy's sales will slow down any time soon - the game will be releasing on PS4 and Xbox One on 5 May and Nintendo Switch on 25 July, where even more people are sure to pick it up.
