It’s been a long time coming, my friends. Back in 2014, Sony announced their intention to adapt The Last of Us. That film project eventually fell apart so when it was revealed that HBO was working on a TV adaptation back in 2020, we didn’t immediately get our hopes up. Thankfully, things seemed to come together this time around.
Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, The Last of Us dropped its first trailer just a few weeks ago. I’m yet to find someone who wasn’t impressed by the trailer, so that’s always a good sign. We also know video game actors Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker will be appearing in undisclosed roles and now, HBO has revealed exactly when the show will air.
Check out the trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us series below.
The Last of Us will officially debut on 15 January, 2023, which is much sooner than we originally thought. The premiere date was listed underneath a teaser trailer for the show on the HBO Max app. One thing that has caused a little bit of confusion is whether The Last of Us is a HBO Original or a Max Original.

The difference? HBO Max is HBO’s dedicated streaming channel. Just like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, The Last of Us is a HBO Original so whilst it will also show on HBO Max, don’t expect all episodes to drop at once. As a HBO Original, the show will air weekly which, if you ask me, is more exciting anyway.
Fans have noticed the absence of one major character in the TV show adaptation. David, a primary antagonist in the game, is yet to be featured in any trailer nor has an actor been announced as being cast in the role. We still don’t know who Troy Baker is playing but could Baker make the switch from video game hero to TV series villain? I guess we’ll find out in January.
