If you’re a fan of HBO’s The Last of Us series, I have some good news for you. The countdown to episode two may feel unbearable but we’re officially past the halfway mark. In just three days, we’ll find out what the next instalment has in store. It’s directed by franchise creator Neil Druckmann so I expect it’s an episode that’ll go down well with long time fans.
It’s no secret that the series is already a major success. It marks HBO’s second-largest debut since 2010, losing out only to House of the Dragon. The Last of Us also sat atop IMDb’s list of highest-rated TV shows of all-time. Fans are returning to the episode, discovering new details in the process. In case you missed it, there’s one killer cameo - plus if you pay careful attention, you’ll notice that Joel and Sarah only narrowly avoided becoming infected. You’d think that the fanfare might’ve peaked, but The Last of Us has just announced another major milestone.
Can’t wait for episode two? Take a look at what’s in store in the season ahead.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that 4.7 million people had tuned into the show’s premiere, but we now know that The Last of Us’ two day viewer count is even larger. Over 10 million people tuned into The Last of Us over the course of two days in the United States, according to the InsideHBOMax Twitter account. I hardly need to say that this is an incredible achievement for a brand new show. This suggests that around 5.3 million people tuned in via HBO Max or catch-up.
This, of course, doesn’t take into account international viewers. To emphasise just how impressive this viewing figure is, Naughty Dog announced in December 2022 that The Last of Us, as a game, has sold 37 million copies since its release in 2013. You can see how having 10 million people tune into the show in just two days bodes well for the series’ prospects.

House of the Dragon was renewed by HBO after airing just two episodes so if we all cross our fingers, maybe we’ll get some The Last of Us renewal information soon.
