As I'm sure you're all-too painfully aware, March 2022 will see the release of an "expanded and enhanced" edition of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
Announced back in 2020 as one of the first PS5 game reveals (because nothing gets us hyped for a new generation like a remaster), Rockstar Games promised this souped-up re-release of the 2013 game would make the most of the new-gen hardware.
Except when the first gameplay trailer dropped a little over a year later, fans were less than impressed. Many struggled to notice the difference between this new version of GTA V and the 2015 PS4/Xbox One ports.
Take a look for yourself below:
While I'm sure there are some key differences, it seems clear the trailer didn't really do enough to justify the existence of yet another re-release of GTA V. It's no surprise, then, that the trailer quickly became one of Rockstar's most-disliked of all time.
To add insult to injury, a brand-new fan project that aims to overhaul the entire game has come along, and it looks way better than Rockstar's official effort. Grand Theft Auto V: Definitive Edition (no relation to last year's rubbish remasters) is a stunning new fan project that completely upscales Los Santos to make it shine.
As spotted by DSO Gaming, the brilliantly named BadassBaboon has been working on the mod for some time. They've manually re-worked every single texture in the game, and the results speak for themselves.
You can take a look at a trailer below to see how Definitive Edition stacks up against the original game:
If you fancy checking this out for yourself, it's worth noting that GTA V: Definitive Edition is in beta state and only available to BadassBaboon's Patreon members. You can take a closer look at the project, and find out how to download, right here.
