Alongside the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell (though you’d be forgiven if you forgot about the latter), Far Cry is one of Ubisoft’s biggest properties.
The first game in the Far Cry series was launched on PC in 2004 before the series eventually released across multiple platforms in the generations that followed. Arguably, the series achieved a new level of popularity with Far Cry 3 in 2012, largely thanks to its charismatic antagonist, Vaas Montenegro.

In our review of Far Cry 6, we said: “You're leading a revolution, starting a vicious civil war between entrenched factions, this is something open world games can reflect so well as areas of its land change based on your actions. But, disappointingly, it not only does little with its premise but is a poor version of things Far Cry has done well in the past.”

The most recent release in the Ubisoft series is the aforementioned Far Cry 6 which arrived in 2021, and arguably, as indicated in our review, was far from the best game in the series. Typically, since the launch of Far Cry 3, each new numbered entry arrives two to three years later, so by that notion, Far Cry 7 shouldn't be too far away.
In an exclusive report by Insider Gaming, a source has informed journalist and industry insider, Tom Henderson, that Far Cry 7 is in development right now. It has been given the codename ‘Project Blackbird’ by Ubisoft, it’s being developed by Ubisoft Montréal, powered by the Snowdrop engine and it’s going to be released in 2025.
Previous rumours have claimed that its full title will be Far Cry: Rise and it's going to be set on a fictional tropical island called Kiman, located somewhere in the “Yellow Sea next to Korea.” However, Insider Gaming claims those reports on its full name and setting are inaccurate.
That being said, Insider Gaming says Far Cry 7 will be a non-linear story, and the story will focus on rescuing a wealthy kidnapped family by a group known as ‘Songs of Truth’. Players are said to be able to interrogate NPCs to learn information such as family members' whereabouts.

What’s more, it’s been claimed that the player must rescue the kidnapped family within 72 in-game hours, which is reportedly 24 hours in real-time. Furthermore, family members can be rescued in any order and some may be killed but you can rescue them all to achieve 100% completion.
Of course, we should take all unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise, but if these rumours are true, it could be the most interesting Far Cry game in years. Hopefully, Ubisoft will officially announce Far Cry 7 at some point this year.
