The Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree was only revealed this week and it’s still months away from being released, but it already seems that a sequel is being teased.
Finally, after nearly a year of waiting since the Elden Ring DLC was announced in February 2023, we were treated to a glorious Shadow of the Erdtree trailer that sent social media into a wild frenzy. It also appeared to feature the new big boss of the Lands Between, Messmer the Impaler, who fans have dubbed “Malenia 2.0”. Now fans are hoping that once the expansion is released, FromSoftware will shift its focus on Elden Ring 2, a possibility that hasn't been ruled out by game director, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

When speaking to IGN, while not confirming that Elden Ring 2 will be FromSoftware’s next game, it wasn't ruled out either. “We don't want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now,” said Miyazaki. “I think we said a similar thing at the end of Dark Souls 3. We didn't want to flatten those possibilities or put a pin in them just at that time.”

He continued: “It's a similar story with Elden Ring. We don't want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future. We don't have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don't want to snuff out that possibility. We think that there could well be something in the future.”
In my humble opinion, given the success that Elden Ring has garnered both critically and commercially, the prospect of an Elden Ring 2 always seems likely and I think we can trust FromSoftware to knock it out of the park once more.
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree will be released on 21 June 2024 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
