For a while, it seemed as if a Dungeons & Dragons film might never see the light of day. For several years, Warner Bros. and Hasbro fought a legal battle over the rights before Paramount Pictures eventually gained control. Filming finally began in 2021 and now here we are. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is officially on the way.
Forget the Hellfire Club. There’s a brand new group of adventurers in town. The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriquez, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis and Regé-Jean Page in what’ll probably be the most star-studded larp you’ll ever see.

The trailer was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con which officially kicked off yesterday. The film centres around “a charming thief (played by Chris Pine) and a band of unlikely adventurers [who] undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic.” The synopsis teases that “things go dangerously awry” and the group “run afoul of the wrong people.” Sounds promising.
Advert
It certainly looks like there were no expenses spared during production. The trailer teases an epic fantasy adventure, which perfectly seems to mix action with comedy.
During the film’s SDCC panel, the cast opened up about their own experiences with D&D (Thanks ComicBook). Chris Pine said he hoped the film “spread the gospel of D&D” whilst Sophia Lillis admitted that she’d regularly sneak away from her new school to venture to her old D&D club. Regé-Jean Page said that he was more of a Diablo and Chrono Trigger fan, but he was always aware of D&D’s impact.
Hugh Grant and Michelle Rodriguez both confirmed that they’re lifelong fans, so it sounds like the film is in good hands. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is scheduled to release on 3 March 2023.
