Dark Souls: Archthrones is basically the Dark Souls 4 we've been waiting on

Dark Souls IV is never going to happen, and despite my love for the series I’m kind of glad that it won’t.

Don’t get me wrong, if FromSoftware announced another sequel tomorrow I’d be excited and play it from start to finish on launch day, but Dark Souls III wrapped everything up so nicely it’d be a shame to spoil it.

While the first game will always be my favourite, Dark Souls III is definitely the best of the trilogy

That said I’m fully onboard with these cracking expansion mods, and there’s arguably none so exciting as Archthrones.

This is an expansion for Dark Souls III that completely changes the game, so much in fact that it could very well be considered a new game entirely.

It’s described as “a retelling of the Dark Souls universe and comprehensive total game mod for Dark Souls III complete with its own lore that is informed by the deepest secrets of the Dark Souls mythos. New enemies, bosses, armor, weapons and spells are only the beginning.”

As someone who adores the lore and trying to connect all the dots of its universe I love it when fans add their own stories, and Archthrones of course features plenty of challenging enemies and bosses to keep you engaged during gameplay.

What’s extra fascinating is that it adopts the world system of Demon Souls, a game I played and finished for the first time recently so it’s very fresh in my mind…

For those who don’t know, Demon Souls gives you access to nearly every area in the game from the start, meaning if you’re struggling with one of its areas you can leave and go to a different one instead, though you will need to return at some point.

Dark Souls: Archthrones feels like an amalgamation of everything the series has been so far, and with a free demo available now you’d be a fool to not at least give it a try.
