Who remembers Croc? Back in 1997, when Crash Bandicoot was already ruling the PlayStation roost and Spyro the Dragon was lurking right around the corner, one delightful green friend had also made his way into the 3D platforming world.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was an underrated gem of the late-90s PS1 (and Sega Saturn) era - what was originally meant to be a partnership between developer Argonaut Games and Nintendo for a standalone Yoshi game turned into Croc’s adventure to save the Gobbos from the evil magician, Baron Dante (not from the Devil May Cry series).
Before we get into it, check out this super-satisfying restoration of a PS1 below.
Sadly, it’s been a very long time since the series has gotten any love - after the 1999 sequel was released, re-tellings of the first two games made their way onto the Game Boy Color, and after that, a small handful of mobile titles came out, but there’s been no official recognition of Croc’s existence since 2006.

Thanks to the efforts of the fanbase though, a Croc comeback is finally on the cards. A fan-made remaster of Legend of the Gobbos is now available to download on PC - it features analog controller support, enhanced lighting effects, and also allows users to play the game in 4K thanks to enhanced resolution support.
“Simply put: This is Croc: Legend of the Gobbos in its best possible form,” the project description reads. “Fully working on modern operating systems, no extra tweaks, patches or workarounds needed! You've probably tried to run the old [executables] and ran into a few issues like controllers not being recognised, graphics not showing correctly, music not playing, some cutscenes not starting or in general no modern resolution being support out-of-the-box. Well, this enhanced version of Croc fixes all that!”
If you fancy revisiting your childhood, you can check out the project here. Maybe one day dear Croc will finally get an official remaster, too.
