If you’re a fan of the Battlefield series, there’s a very decent chance that you’re familiar with Battlefield 2’s ‘Project Reality’ mod, which, back in the day, aimed to “create a more realistic combat environment” and “place a greater emphasis on teamwork and cooperation” than the base game.
The mod was super successful, and for years now, a different team have been cooking up something similar for Battlefield 3, dubbed the Reality Mod. Earlier this year, we got our very first glimpse at the overhauled gameplay, which looks incredible - built on the BF3 modding platform, VU, it’s set to offer a higher tickrate, built-in server browsing, and private server hosting.
Meanwhile, Battlefield 2042's first season, Zero Hour, went live last month - check out the trailer below.
Now, as reported by DSOGaming, the Reality Mod team have just revealed a brand new trailer, along with that all-important release date: “[Seven] years of development, more than 80 contributors. What we have achieved is absolute madness,” the video description reads. “We are super stoked to finally release BF3: Reality Mod on the 17th of July!”
Fans have been pouring out their love and support for the project: “You guys just saved the Battlefield franchise for me! I have no words for what you guys have achieved. Both a technical marvel and [labour] of love! See you on the battlefields,” commented Luigi Saguier. “I’m so hype. Thank you guys for doing this. It’s literally like a dream come true,” wrote Anthony Vega.

If you want to check out the mod yourself, the team note that you’ll need a legitimate copy of the original game and its DLC on Steam or Origin - the choice is yours. Let’s face it, chances are, you’re going to have a much better time with this than you would Battlefield 2042 - despite only releasing last November, the game dropped below 1000 concurrent players on Steam earlier this year. I would say that it was good while it lasted, but was it, ever? Better luck next time, EA.
