Batman: Arkham fans seriously divided over new video game tease

Is this good or bad?

Batman: Arkham fans are rightly divided following a development regarding the future of the DC video game series from publisher Warner Bros. Games.

Rocksteady Studios is one of the most popular video game development teams in recent years, largely thanks to its brilliant Batman: Arkham trilogy which began with Arkham Asylum in 2009, with the last entry being Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015 (when not including the VR spin-off).

Check out the Batman: Arkham Knight trailer below!

Ok, technically, the last game set in the “Arkhamverse” was the woeful 2024 flop Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that I will continue to train my brain into thinking it never existed. Well, that’s until I’m required to write an article such as this one.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is such a bad game that it’s not only been killed off with no further content support just a year after its launch, but it almost killed the good reputation that Rocksteady Studios has built over the years.

It’s unclear how much creative input Rocksteady Studios had over Kill the Justice League or whether the game was the bidding of corporate overlords trying to jump on that live-service gravy train. Either way, I just hope all those involved have learned from any mistakes that may have been made.

As such, Rocksteady Studios will no doubt be trying to rebuild its reputation and gain back the trust of many fans. One way to do that is by developing a remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum or by giving us a proper sequel to Arkham Knight.

With that in mind, former MCU director and producer James Gunn is now working alongside Peter Safran to build up the DCU dawning a new age of Batman, Superman and more movies galore.

Part of that concept is working with video game developers such as Rocksteady Studios so that all DCU movies, animations and video games share the same universe, which, at the time of writing, does not include Robert Pattinson’s Batman who exists in the Elseworlds timeline.

Recently, DC fans on Reddit have been discussing (Thanks ComicBook) the fact that James Gunn has not only had discussions with Rocksteady Studios but also with Mortal Kombat studio NeverRealm.

“Hopefully, James Gunn has no input on these games,” said Blacksad9999. “I don't want a bunch of comedic superhero games.”

“Meh, whatever discussions or plans they're making won't be announced for years, and then even more years after that,” claimed Biggu5Dicku5.

“I wonder if this means the DCU will have some influence on the future games?” asked Competitive_Code1527 in another Reddit thread. “But not at the cost of the Wonder Woman game. They better not scrap it.”

Sorry, to break it to you Competitive_Code1527, but that Wonder Woman game was cancelled after you made this comment. I think you may have cursed it.

“This is good news. I love NetherRealm Studios games and I hope we get a DC game from them sooner rather than later,” exclaimed a hopeful Grimnir001.

“Now let's hope they bring in the old Rocksteady team, it's clear the new team pooped themselves to death with Suicide Squad,” replied Blacknite45.

I’m not sure how I feel about James Gunn getting involved with the development of DC video games, after all, at least from his perspective, it’s uncharted waters at the moment.

Personally, I’d be more than happy for the likes of Rocksteady and NetherRealm Studios to be left alone to work its magic or in Rocksteady’s case, rediscover that magic.

That being said, if James Gunn has some genuinely helpful input that is for the better of the game, then that probably won't be a bad thing. I guess, only time will tell.
