I don’t know about you but I thought things couldn’t get any worse after the release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. However, I have seemingly been proved wrong with the arrival of Skull Island: Rise of Kong that has already been hailed as the worst game of 2023.
Despite being the first King Kong inspired game in almost 20 years, Skull Island: Rise of Kong is already being labelled a “disaster” despite only being released on 17 October. The game follows the ape as he sets out on a quest to avenge his murdered parents at the hands of the alpha predator, Gaw.
Take a look at the game in action below.
What sounds like a pretty straight forward action-adventure story is anything but as Skull Island: Rise of Kong is already sitting at a ‘mostly negative’ rating on Steam and 2.4 ‘generally unfavourable’ user rating on Metacritic. With one user review simply saying “Bruh…”, I think we know all we need to know about IguanaBee’s title.

“IguanaBee games more like IguanaBee rid of this game from my Steam library,” read another review. Another praised the game but also criticised its “bad combat, bad visuals, poor level design, boring boss fights” as well as reports of the game crashing GPUs.
“This is an actual video game, not a SFM meme-project that I initially thought it was. Its absurdity rivals a toddler's scribble, making Gollum's video game seem like a masterpiece,” read one Steam review. “This catastrophe appears as if a crack-addled con artist designed it, aiming to scam unsuspecting five-year-olds. A disaster in every pixel.”
Some reviews tell a very different story though. Those who are enjoying the fact that the game has become a huge meme have been leaving it perfect 10 out of 10 scores. "Literally sent chills up my spine, incredible," read one, while another added, "All I gotta say is this is a masterpiece." Very funny.
2023 appears to be an unlucky year for video games inspired by some legendary fictional characters. As a result, Skull Island: Rise of Kong joins the hall of fame alongside The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in 2023’s worst-rated games. Luckily, this year was also the year of some incredible games. It’s just a shame we won’t see King Kong at the Game Awards.
