Nintendo Switch 2 free game is a Mario classic

I invested so many hours into this one as a kid

A fresh free download starring Mario (and friends) is just about to hit the Nintendo Switch 2, and if you never played this one when it originally came out, do yourself a favour and grab a mate to enjoy this classic with you.

Quite possibly one of my top three Mario games of all time is finally about to land on the Nintendo Switch 2, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

As revealed on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel earlier this week, the Nintendo GameCube title Super Mario Strikers will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 at the start of next month.

You will, of course, have to own an active subscription for the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service to actually play any of the GameCube titles on the Nintendo Switch 2, but otherwise you won’t have to pay a penny get your hands on this one.

Now, if you’ve never played Super Mario Strikers before but you have played Mario Strikers: Battle League, then I’d suggest you keep an open mind going into this one.

Basically all of the things that people criticised Mario Strikers: Battle League for stemmed from the fact that the game felt like an inferior version of Super Mario Strikers.

Personally, I sunk so many hours into Super Mario Strikers when I was young that Mario Strikers: Battle League felt like such a disappointment by comparison, because they’d basically perfected the formula the first time around in 2005.

If you’re already keen to get stuck in, you are going to have to hold your horses for a few more days. Super Mario Strikers will be available through the Nintendo Switch 2 Online GameCube service next week, on July 3.

Just make sure you’ve got a mate to play through this one with you in local co-op mode, because I can’t seem to find any confirmation that you’ll be able to play through it online.
