Despite being around for almost half a century gaming is still thought of as one of the newest forms of narrative and media. Along with developing technology, new ways for creators to tell stories are always entering the fray. However, despite the absolute enormity of the industry many still believe that more traditional media, such as books or films, are better vehicles for delivering a narrative.
As the conversation turns to the virtual metaverse being the future of entertainment, eyes have returned to gaming, and it's unique methods of interactive and environmental storytelling. Now experts seem to agree. At the annual DICE summit (as reported by IGN) Joe Russo, director of the film Avengers: Endgame, discussed how he believes that the leaders of the gaming industry will be the lords of the metaverse.
Those unfamiliar with Russo's work can check out the official trailer for Avengers: Endgame below.
“I think the revolution comes from the gaming side because that’s where the technology is. - The future is going to be virtual.” Russo said in talks surrounding the future of narratives. Social media such as Facebook has shown, it wants to pave the way in this arena with its recent Meta rebrand. However, Russo was very skeptical of this. He says games will “pull the world forward in a way Facebook can’t. They destroyed the world and now they’re going to create a Metaverse we can all escape to.”

When comparing what can be done in games with his own industry, film, he still appears to favour the future of the interactive medium. "Traditional film studios do not understand [the technology] nor is it part of their business plan to curate technology, house it, pay for it, pay for its development, hang on to it. - It’s a gaming company in my opinion that is going to be the most potent entertainment company in the world.”
I wonder if we'll see a Marvel's Avengers world in a platform like Roblox any time soon.
