Last week, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla finally landed on Steam, two years after its initial release elsewhere. Given that it was originally received pretty well by critics and fans, you’d expect that it’d continue getting mostly positive reviews on there too, right?
Wrong, apparently. As reported by Eurogamer, Valhalla has been receiving a slew of negative reviews on Steam, and most of them are for the exact same reason - the complete lack of achievements.

That’s right, despite the fact that on other platforms, there are plenty of achievements to go round (as PlayStation Platinum trophy hunters will know all too well), these are completely absent from the Steam release. And yes, this isn’t a bug, Ubisoft has confirmed that it’s fully intentional, although it wasn’t explained why.

You can understand players’ disappointment, and they’ve been making it known in the review section: “Good game but please give us the achievement system!” wrote Juneskuy. “Honestly love the game but no achievements?! How lazy,” MrSam420 said. “Comes two years late to Steam without basic Steam features implemented. When asked about it they double down on their decision. Why even bother bringing it to Steam to begin with?” Poke questioned.
Back in November when the issue was first raised on the Steam forums, Ubisoft responded: “We have forwarded your requests and this particular thread to our Valhalla team and Steam teams to consider and see if this is doable. We have no further updates to provide at the moment, but this is under review.”
With that in mind, it seems like there’s a chance that achievements could be added in the future since there’s so much demand for them, but don’t hold your breath. If going for rare accomplishments in games is important to you, you might want to avoid the Steam release for now.
